Arrow Jedi: Episode CCCIX

This is the final installment of my Arrow Jedi trilogy (here’s the first and the second). For this one, I added lightsabers to two battle sequences from the Arrow Season 3 mid-season finale. The first features Ra’s al Ghul against eight lightsaber-wielding members of the League of Assassins. The second is the epic battle between Oliver Queen and Ra’s al Ghul on the mountaintop. As always, there are plenty of Star Wars easter eggs.

 Visual Effects

Most of the visual effects layered onto the original video were created using Adobe After Effects. The WhaBam (LucasFilm) logo was made in Illustrator and After Effects with Video Copilot’s Element 3D and Optical Flares. The title crawl was made in Adobe Illustrator and After Effects. The lightsabers were made from Video Copilot’s free plug-in. For the Sith lightsaber in the first half, I added some distortion to create a flaming saber effect to make it more menacing. I also motion tracked Sith eyes to Ra’s.

Sound Design

Adobe Audition was used to create the soundtrack. I extracted the center channel (dialogue and sound effects) from the source video, added music from Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith and some clips from the Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens trailer. I also added the lightsaber sounds, other Star Wars sound effects, and the infamous Wilhelm Scream.

3D Rendering

The Imperial Battle Cruiser, Hoth, Tie Fighter, R2-D2, and the end title card were all rendered inside Adobe After Effects using Element 3D.
